DISCLAIMER: This post has pictures of a placenta so if you get grossed out easily then don't scroll past my warning. I'll let you know when the pictures are coming up.

Learning how to be a midwife starts with basic skills, like in my last post I showed where we were learning about proper handwashing and gloving skills. Every week we have been building on those skills.
Getting blood pressure, pulse, and respirations.
We have practice taking each others vital signs so we'll get confident in this skill. Getting vital signs in this setting is good because we are learning to concentrate and listen in a busy environment.
Learning how to take blood pressures
As we are learning our skills we are also assembling our prenatal bags. By the time we finish this part of the program our bag will contain everything we need to do a prenatal exam.

Another skill that we have to learn that I've never thought about before is examination of a placenta after birth. We were fortunate that our instructor had a birth one night and the mother told her that if she wanted the placenta for class she was welcome to take it. I HAVE PICTURES OF THE PLACENTA, SO IF YOU DON'T WANT TO SEE THEN DON'T SCROLL ANY FURTHER.

I wanted to give a buffer picture just in case someone scrolled to far :)
This is the maternal side
Amy explained the parts of a placenta and what we're looking for. I didn't realize that there are so many identifiable parts, it's really an amazing design.
This is the baby's side
She explained how the vessels run from the mother to the baby. This side is referred to as the "Tree of Life" because the cord looks like the trunk of a tree and the vessels look like the roots.
That's me :) I thought it was cool
Everyone in the class got a chance to hold and inspect the placenta. I appreciate the mom that shared with us.
Kind of grossed out but thought it was cool too
Some were not as sure about the experience while others really got into it.
I can't decide if I like it or not
Look Mom! Isn't this awesome?
This is a part of being a midwife … sometimes it's messy and maybe a little yucky. But so far I'm loving it!!

As always I appreciate all prayers and words of encouragement. I'm thankful to be able to follow the calling that God has placed on my life. If you would like to contribute towards either my schooling or a vehicle I have two easy ways to give.
